NEWBORN REGISTRY ITEMS

BABY NEWBORN REGISTRY CHECKLIST

Printable PDF
There are so many things needed for a new baby, it can be and often is overwhelming for moms. I am obsessed with high quality, safe and healthy items for newborns. We researched, studied, changed it up a million times and here are the best brands and must haves for new babies. Here are the baby registry items I think are the best and recommend:

NURSERY

A bedside cosleeper, like this one truly saved our sleep for the first six months of our newborn twins' life. It was perfect to have the babies so close for feedings. They slept so well and then when they regressed around five or six months, we moved them into their own cribs in their own room. It worked out really well after learning the hard way, the first time around. (There is no tired like first time mom, newborn twins, tired!)

CHANGING PAD COVER

These are comfy, high quality and come in 17 different patterns! Get at least 2 of these because you'll be changing them often.

SHEETS

These are the best quality and softest baby sheets! You can probably guess- one of my favorite brands!

BLANKETS

Super soft and organic baby blankets.

MATTRESS

These are great because they're made of soybean and are waterproof.

SOUND MACHINE

This sound machine is a basic and wonderful product that is even portable for when you're on the go. It is great for newborns and a must have from day one of baby's life. We even brought ours to the hospital each time.

LIGHT UP SOUND MACHINE

Sound machines are a must with kids, for us. They are great for blocking out sounds in the house and outside and mimic the sound of being in the womb, so they're really serving multiple purposes. This kind is great for when kids start waking up early but aren't sure how early it is. We set the light to change from yellow (a good color for sleep and a night-light) to blue (an alert color for the eyes) when it's time to wake up. We started this when they were still in toddler beds and eager to come out, bright and early. It's great because they can still wake up and play quietly in their room and parents don't get an unexpected 4:00am wake up call. This product might have single handedly saved my sleep for years of my life. It was one of those, I should have done this sooner moments and the kids weren't even two yet!
Baby Registry Example
If you're planning on creating a baby registry soon, I highly recommend Amazon Registry. They truly have the earth's largest baby selection. If you want to see some of our most important items for the first month of baby's life, check out our registry that is still up in case it helps to know some of our favorite brands and most important must haves. The pictures below are links to our favorite newborn registry items!

ACTIVITY AND GEAR

BABY GYM

There are many great baby gyms out there and they are so helpful for new moms and extremely good for baby's physical and visual development from day 1! I love to get this and baby monitors for gifts for new moms I know because they are such important newborn items! What I love about this baby gym specifically is it's soft all around with multiple textures, is washable, doesn't have flashing lights, and has a mirror!

BABY SWINGS/ROCKERS

This is a nice, standard swing that is budget friendly and does the job. It does take up a little more floor space than some but the comfort and many options make up for it, if you have the room.
This is the gold standard and top notch swing/rocker that takes up less space and still has many options and song choices. It is a little pricier but the moms I know who have one say it's great.

PLAY YARDS

This portable crib/play yard is a must for travel and can be helpful for naps and unique situations. It serves dual purposes and the mattress can be adjusted to the bottom as baby grows.

CARRIERS/WRAPS

This original and european made carrier is our favorite because it's simple and great quality. This brand is the original and they even have a few styles and sizes for your selection.
This is a great budget friendly and best selling carrier. They love being snuggled so much!
This is another trendy and popular option that many moms think is the best. They are everywhere.
This wrap is a different style and can be a little tricky to learn at first but once you do it's so cozy and lightweight. It's perfect for fourth trimester parenting and you can even double up twins with this one.

BATH

There are so many bath products we love, you can check them out here:
Bath Night

WASHCLOTHS

These are the BEST washcloths! So soft and a few adorable color options. I love that they're thick, absorbent and very soft.

BABY BATHTUB

This baby bathtub is perfect and grows with baby so they can start reclined and move to sitting up when they get bigger.

BATH TOYS

Best Bath Toys for Learning and Fun

There are so many wonderful bath toys, I especially love these floating bubbles. Here is a post with many more Bath Toys if you would like to see more ideas, here.

BATH SAFETY

This is so important for protecting little one's heads from the sharp metal spout.
A thermometer so the bath temperature is baby safe!

BABY SHAMPOO

This is a great shampoo for babies and kids with sensitive skin which is all of them... lol
These are the cutest and softest, most absorbent baby towels. They are made of bamboo and come in a variety of adorable animals.

CLOTHING

Clothing is something I would not recommend getting a lot of before baby arrives because so many people love to get cute baby clothing for you and your baby as gifts. The basic footie pajamas with a zipper (SO much faster!!) is all I would even add to the registry as far as clothes goes. Swaddles with velcro and sleep sacks are a must for safety and make life so much easier for any middle of the night changes or re-swaddling. Here is some important information about baby safety and sleep from the American Academy of Pediatricians for SIDS prevention.
  • BACK IS BEST
  • ABC-Alone (no stuffies/blankets/toys/), Back, Crib (flat surfaces only) until one year.
  • Pacifiers help, so does breastfeeding
  • Sleep in the same room as newborns until 6 months (the sound of your breath helps them regulate their breathing), Bedside cosleepers were the perfect option for us because they are flat on their backs in their own space but still right next to you. Best of both worlds.
Here is an excerpt from the American Academy of Pediatricians post, Safe Sleep:
"Pediatricians should support all families in implementing recommendations that reduce the risk of sleep-related infant death:
  • Place infants on their backs for sleep in their own sleep space with no other people.
  • Use a crib, bassinet, or portable play yard with a firm, flat mattress and a fitted sheet. Avoid sleep on a couch or armchair or in a seating device, like a swing or car safety seat (except while riding in the car).
  • Keep loose blankets, pillows, stuffed toys, bumpers, and other soft items out of the sleep space."

SWADDLES

These swaddles are so perfect for new parents, they are for 0-3 months and take the tricky part out of swaddling! Just tuck them in and velcro them up! Safe and snug. We even brought ours to the hospital and the nurses thought they were so great.

SLEEP SACKS

Adjustable sleep sack for the in-between time, 3-6 months
Arms free but still no blankets yet, 6-12 months.
These sleep sacks are (literally) life savers and can be used all the way to one year and older. They keep baby safe with no blankets but cozy and warm and zippered up! This is another great gift idea.
These are my favorite onsies for newborns to wear pretty much around the clock. They need diaper changes so often in the beginning that the zipper really helps. Twin moms? Times two! After having six babies and dealing with all the clothing and changes over the years, this is all I would buy if I was starting over. Just a whole bunch of zippered onsies and nothing else. They are INCREDIBLY convenient and helpful.

MITTENS AND SOCKS

Mittens & Socks for newborns? If I was starting my baby journey all over again, I wouldn't buy newborn mittens or socks (see zippered footie onsies, above). Many zippered onsies even have mittens built in!
Hats are important, especially for newborns regulating their temperature. They give you hats in the hospital but having a hand knit one or a cute one ready to go would be great to pack in your hospital bag. Baby hats are so adorable! I love this one...it's so cute!
Pants are also not super necessary early on because of all the onsies but I can't resist some adorable denim baby pants like these!

ALL TIME FAVORITE BABY & KID CLOTHING COMPANY: TEA COLLECTION!

I love the Tea Clothing collection more than any other kids clothing brand I've found so far. They have globally inspired style, are a give back company (10% goes back to kid foundations), started in 2002 in San Francisco and of course are extremely high quality, durable and ADORABLE! Adurable?! One cool thing you may not know about them though is that they have an entire line dedicated to reusing their clothes which is great for the environment and also the budget since pricing is reduced, greatly. Tea Rewear also lets you choose very specific designs since there are so many options, going back years. For example if you're looking for a s'mores shirt because you're going camping or a birthday themed shirt for the big day, they have so many options. Here is a code to get $10 off if you spend $100. If you're like me and have a hard time resisting adorable kids clothes, give them a try.

FEEDING

Since babies don't start eating solid foods until six months, you might want to wait until they're older to order high chairs, utensils and dishes, unless you have plenty of storage. If you're going to breastfeed you may not need any bottles and nipples but you may want to get a few bottles, just in case.
Different babies prefer different pacifiers so getting a couple different sizes is helpful. We started with the kind from the hospital (green) and switched to the style with little holes to fit the pacifier clips (very important) when they were about 1 or 2 months old. Pacifiers are great when babies are young and to help soothe for sleeping and they are even good for SID's safety, too. We make sure to not overdo the pacifiers by making them only for bedtime once they're two and saying goodbye to them by age three.
These pacifier clips are so helpful!

HEALTH/SAFETY

Doorknobs, outlets, kitchen cabinets, toilets... they're going to need to be protected from themselves!
We love this baby monitor with video and talking ability. It's been a very important parenting helper for years!
These safety clippers even have a magnifying glass (their nails are SO tiny!) and a safety light to see in the dark. Some moms swear by clipping nails while they're sleeping.
An awesome air purifier with a hepa filter and wifi option.

TOYS & BOOKS

Two of our all time favorite baby books.
The most famous teether for a reason, it's the best!
A classic but soft and cute!
This musical toy combines so many developmental musical skills for little ones.
Accessories help keep baby entertained and happy as they grow.

NURSING

Nursing items are important to have right away!  Most insurance covers the moderna breast pump so you won't need to buy one. There are other specialty pumps if you have more specific needs.
These nursing robes come in many patterns and are so soft, elegant and make you feel like the momma queen you are.
A must have for nursing or bottle feeding!
If you're having twins, this one is our favorite.
The BEST storage bags.

OTHER

An oldie, but goodie... This book is a classic for a reason. It covers EVERYTHING for the first year for babies!
A beautiful pregnancy journal to document the special journey.
I am obsessed with the exotic, natural wood look of these frames that will do baby's first photo justice. These modern, made-in-italy photo frames are so beautiful and the type of wood is rare and gorgeous.
A minimalist baby memory book to keep hard copies of those precious moments organized and in one place.
