A RECIPE FOR MOTHER'S DAY
A DELICIOUS MAKE AHEAD MEAL SO EVERYONE CAN RELAX AND ENDJOY THE DAY!
THE REAL GIFT TO MOM... NO COOKING OR CLEANING
Of course some women love to cook and a couple hours in the kitchen sounds like fun, but for me and many women I know we'd rather NOT cook on Mother's Day! Here is how our big family relaxes and enjoys the holiday.
Prepare Brunch Ahead
For the first big meal of the day, it is so nice to have a casserole or quiche or anything you love that can be just cooked in the oven, the day of. We have a family tradition of having Susan Company Breakfast Casserole (click for recipe) which is a classic southern breakfast casserole that is plain enough for young palettes but delicious enough for the parents! It's also just a few ingredients and so easy to make ahead. We LOVE it and enjoy it on many holidays throughout the year. You can put the ingredients in the pan the day or night before and just put it in the oven 45 minutes before you're ready to eat. One way to make the recipe even quicker is buy prepackaged, cooked breakfast sausage and pre-grated cheese. Tillamook is delicious! It couldn't be more simple! Other great options are a frozen quiche with strawberries on the side or any favorite casserole. My mom originally got this recipe from a co-worker in the 90's but it has been adapted many times and is a classic, although I've tried to find an original source. Here is our version.
Paper Plates
Paper plates can be so nice on a special day to skip dishes and if you think about the water and electricity you save by skipping the dishes and make sure to get recycled plates or even compostable, it's not so bad for the environment. Paper plates are great for taking outside for a picnic, if the weather is nice, too! Pick out your favorite holiday themed or try one of these options.

Cards for Mom
I love giving kids a plain piece of cardstock or premade blank card, some markers and crayons or the craft box and seeing what they come up with! This works great for most occasions including birthdays.

A great craft box! Perfect for older kids and keeps creators busy for hours!
Sparkly crayons for a fun change up.

Our favorite schoolbox (these are AWESOME) and each kid gets their own color. We also like to use nice coffee cans to store art supplies for a reusable.
Flowers
Of course flowers are a must for Mother's Day but if you have a houseplant, tree/shrub or flowering perennial that you could ask for, or give, instead of a bouquet, they will keep reproducing flowers, year after year! A rhododendron, like the one pictured is an easy to grow flowering bush (zones 5-8) that does well in the shade and flowers right around mother's day. Cherry trees are also beautiful this time of year. Sometimes we give gardening projects in our family, like planting a tree, a little weeding or mulching the garden beds. It's a great way to show you care while beautifying the yard.
